World Literacy Day

On 19 September 2015, World Literacy Day and Dignity for Children Month was commemorated in Kampala.

The day started off with a parade by a brass band of young people from St. Mary Kevin Entebbe, one of the 23 Centres involved in a joint Reading for and with Children (RfC/RwC) Project the Lions have partnered together with The Aga Khan Foundation, Serena Hotels and National Library of Uganda. Aga Khan Foundation sponsored the purchase of some books (about 116 books) and shelves for them, Serena provided the refreshments/lunch, while National Library gave us the initial batch of books ranging between 26 to 106 per community children library. Of the 23 such libraries, Lions Clubs has mobilised the literacy resources (mostly books) and supervises directly 12 of them located in Kampala and Entebbe.

Lion members and well wishers joined the children from the community library centres to match from the children's park at City Oil in Kamwokya up to Kamwokya Christian Caring Community Centre, Youth Wing the main venue of the event. Mr. Naboth Namanya, Commissioner for East African Affairs, representing Lion Hon. Shem Bageine, Minister of East African Affairs, was the Chief Walker and officiated at the function. About 300 children and adults participated in the walk while the event was attended by approximately 3000 people including Local Council and Church leaders in the area. Past Multiple Council Chairperson, Lion Polly Ndyarugahi, spoke on behalf of the Lions District leadership. Among the Lion dignitaries were Sub Treasurer Uganda, Lion Geoffrey Mwesigwa, District Chairman Leadership, Lion John Bosco Ntangaare, Past Presidents for Entebbe Lions Club and members of Kampala New Century Lions Club, the coordinators of the event.

The highlights of the event also included the official commissioning of the community children's library at Kamwokya Centre, an exhibition of books and toys and a reading competition by children from the other 22 centres. Cultural items like songs and dances were also performed. Longhorn Publishers also donated some more books and reading materials to the library in Kamwokya. Prizes were given out to the winning teams.

Earlier in the week, books and shelves had been delivered to the community children libraries in Kiwaffu Entebbe, Sunrise Nursery and Primary School (Bwaise), and Kampala School School for the Physically handicapped as part of the events to mark September as a month for Literacy and Dignity for Children activities.
